WISER at Duke (WISERduke) is a chartered Duke student organization committed to helping improve the quality of girls’ secondary education in Muhuru Bay, Kenya as part of the Women’s Institute for Secondary Education and Research NGO. WISERduke is unique because it is founded on a strong partnership with an vibrant community in Kenya. We receive weekly updates from the ground, allowing the student group and Duke community to track tangible progress at WISER and in Muhuru Bay. With the January 2010 opening of the school, the student group will play an even more integral part in the WISER story. Through fundraising efforts on campus, Duke students are invited to join the tradition of supporting this cause through WISERduke’s annual WISER week. The week is filled with educational and social events, that aim to raise awareness of the health, education, and economic issues facing girls in Muhuru Bay. Throughout the rest of the year, we host guest speakers and panel discussions.
