The Girls’ Club (TGC) is a unique mentoring organization that connects Duke women with girls enrolled in Durham middle schools. TGC is dedicated to providing a supportive social group for adolescent girls in the Durham community through weekly sessions focused on teaching the importance of education, healthy lifestyle choices, and self-respect. The organization’s goal is to encourage young girls to become successful, confident, and conscious women. Weekly sessions take place on Tuesdays from 6:00 – 7:30 PM at the Emily K. Center. During this time, Duke women should be prepared to engage in discussions and activities with all mentors and mentees, while fostering a strong one-on-one relationship with their own mentee. Every year, The Girls’ Club takes mentees on a local Fall field trip, such as a trip to Frankie’s Fun Park or a Duke Women’s basketball game. Additionally, TGC embarks on an annual overnight Spring field trip outside of North Carolina. Past destinations have included Washington, DC, Williamsburg, VA and Richmond, VA. Interested Duke women should attend and provide their NetIDs at the Student Activities Fair in August, and will be sent applications thereafter. Upon completing an application, select applicants will be invited to interview, and the most promising individuals will be chosen as mentors.
