GANO (Gente Aprendiendo para Nuevas Oportunidades) is a student-run service organization at Duke University that provides one-on-one ESL tutoring to Spanish-speaking adults and children in the Durham community in an effort to aid these immigrants adjust to life in the United States. Every year we host two potlucks per semester and one Saturday GANO workshop per semester.
GANO aims to culturally, academically, and socially enrich the lives of everyone involved. Both sides benefit from interacting with people from a different cultural background while also improving their language skills whether it be in English or Spanish. By providing child care and child tutoring, it also becomes a family experience for Durham residents and further promotes the importance of becoming culturally accustomed to living in the United States. Various social events throughout the year further help foster a positive relationship between Duke students and residents from the Durham community.
